Ghislain Brown-Kossi is a Vancouver-based Canadian artist from France, whose lineage stems to the Ivory Coast. He has been painting since 2017 and describes his style as “Archaeological Pop”. With a practice rooted in research, his work reflects the multiple cultures and places embedded not only within his own identity but also within shared histories.
Zaouli, part of the Sacred Object series, takes its name from the Zaouli dance of the Ivory Coast, a performance that embodies community, rhythm, and cultural identity. In this work, the artist layers African wax fabric, geometric structures, plaster bas-relief and symbols with painted patterns and collaged surfaces, creating a visual rhythm that echoes the movement and energy of the dance. The piece reimagines ritual forms as contemporary objects, highlighting the coexistence of tradition and innovation. By treating patterns, symbols, and materials as sacred elements, Zaouli preserves cultural memory while opening new dialogues across time and place.
Bentall Centre Lobby Gallery will celebrate its opening this Thursday, October 9th, from 5–7 p.m.
