Dedication to Sam Carter
This exhibition is dedicated to Sam Carter whose brilliance has not dimmed since his passing in November 2023. Sam collected the Sampson Matthews prints and several of the images shown here were his, as are many of the images in “Art for War and Peace”. He saw with clarity and kept pointing to the obvious, that Canadian artistic expressions in Art and Design are stellar. He co-founded the Art and Design Award with BC Achievement Foundation and brought support and recognition to this field of practice. Artist, mentor, curator, advocate and educator, Sam guided and inspired scores of young creatives and provided them with international opportunities. This continued long past his retirement as an Emeritus Professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. His energy was boundless and his legacy reached into the hearts of all that knew him. He was hilarious, insightful, kind, mischievous, and brilliant and we thank him for his generosity and thoughtful companionship and carry him in our back pockets.
The Sampson Matthews exhibition offers a selection of original prints and have included the book “Art for War and Peace” by Ian Sigvaldason and Scott Steedman to add a more detailed account of the development of the collection. The exhibition’s title, “The Whispering Earth- Stories from the Land”, suggests that the land is the storyteller offering both the beauty of the landscape and the varied and complex stories that it represents. The land is neither static nor one-dimensional. It is a dynamic and vibrant space in a constant state of transformation, rich with meaning for all of us who call the land home.
Curators Ray Hartley and Sheila Hall
We acknowledge and respect that this exhibition is situated on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We would like to thank Doug Coupland, Jason and Wendy Hartley and private donors for their contributions of the Sampson Matthew silkscreen prints for this exhibition.
Sincere gratitude to our sponsors and their teams.
